This is the moment a newborn baby girl is held after being found inside a garbage bag still with her umbilical cord attached when a woman heard what she thought was a cat crying.
The baby was found in the yard of a house on Otavio Ignacio da Silva Street in the Guarituba neighbourhood of Piraquara, in the Metropolitan Region of Curitiba, Parana state, Brazil, on 24th August.
Katia Andreja Bege said she had been inside her home when she heard a noise coming from the yard and initially thought one of her cats was crying.
She went outside to investigate because she thought the feline might have been injured.
Katia then discovered a transparent plastic bag covered with a black towel on the neighbouring plot and found the newborn girl inside.
The baby was still attached to her umbilical cord when she was found.
In the footage, Katia holds the tiny newborn in her arms after she has been discovered and appears to cradle her while thanking God for finding her.
Katia said: "Thank God I found her!"
A neighbour who filmed the baby shortly after the discovery can also be heard describing what had happened.
The neighbour said: "Goodness, look what my neighbour found inside the rubbish bag thrown there in the yard. She still has the umbilical cord! My God! She has just found her!
"She thought it was her cat crying, went to look and saw a child inside the rubbish. My God!"
Katia called another neighbour for help, and SAMU, Brazil's emergency medical service, was contacted.
Paramedics arrived at the property and took the baby to the Hospital de Clinicas in Curitiba, where she arrived at around 4am.
Hospital superintendent Adonis Nars said the baby had been born at full term after 40 weeks of pregnancy and weighed 2.770 kilogrammes.
She arrived with severe hypothermia but was breathing spontaneously and was taken for examinations in the neonatal intensive care unit.
Doctors confirmed two fractures, involving her collarbone and thigh bone, which the hospital said could have occurred during the birth.
The hospital said the birth had taken place outside a medical facility in critical circumstances and that the baby was continuing to undergo examinations for possible complications.
Despite arriving with severe hypothermia and the injuries, the newborn's condition was described as stable.
Initial police investigations indicated that the baby's mother was a pregnant teenager who had given birth that morning before leaving the newborn in the vacant lot opposite her home.
Police chief Joao Paulo Pelaez said the teenager believed the baby was dead, then wrapped her in a towel and placed her inside a plastic bag before leaving her at the site.
The teenager told police she had hidden the pregnancy because it had resulted from rape.
She and her parents were taken to the police station to give statements.
The teenager will face trial while remaining free.
The Parana Civil Police opened an investigation into suspected abandonment of a vulnerable person.
The baby remained in hospital under medical care and the protection of the relevant authorities.
