This is the moment a burglar lowers himself in through a convenience store ceiling only to be arrested less than an hour later as he sat scratching the lottery tickets he had just stolen.

The footage, recorded by the shop's security system, was obtained from the Bradenton Police Department (BPD) on 9th June in the city of Bradenton, in the US state of Florida, and shows the incident on 7th June.

The clip shows the suspect lowering himself into the Mini Mart store from a panel in the ceiling before raiding it and stealing rolls of lottery scratch cards.

The suspect can then be seen making his way out of the shop through the storage area, using a lighter to light his way.

Officers said they detained Bryan Jones, 46, on Sunday night, roughly an hour after he raided Bud's Mini Mart on the city's Carlton Drive.

The BPD said in a statement on 9th June: "Pro tip: If your burglary ends with you scratching stolen lottery tickets a short distance from the crime scene, your odds of avoiding arrest are significantly worse than your odds of winning the lottery.

"BPD arrested Bryan Jones, 46, Sunday night ... approximately one hour after he burglarized Bud's Mini Mart on Carlton Drive.

"CCTV showed Jones entering through the ceiling around 9:55 p.m., immediately triggering the store's security system.

"Apparently, his shopping list included handfuls of cigarettes, stacks of lottery tickets, alcohol, and, for reasons known only to him, bologna and cheese slices.

"Jones spent less than 10 minutes inside the store, but fortunately for us, every second was caught on camera. With help from the store owner, officers quickly reviewed the footage and relayed a suspect description to dispatch.

"Detective Beckley happened to be nearby and spotted Jones down the road, enthusiastically scratching his freshly acquired (and unpaid-for) lottery tickets while carrying a backpack full of cigarettes.

"As it turns out, the only thing he didn't steal was good luck.

"After realizing he hadn't struck it rich, Jones agreed to speak with detectives and was subsequently booked into jail. He was charged with Burglary to a Structure Causing Damage (USD 1,000+) [GBP 747] and Criminal Mischief (USD 1,000+)."
