This footage shows Spanish police boats chasing a stolen luxury yacht at speed across open water off the Balearics.

The footage was obtained from the Guardia Civil on 24th August and shows the pursuit in waters off Ibiza, in the Spanish region of the Balearic Islands, on 23rd August.

The video shows the yacht running at speed with patrol boats closing in on it, and an aircraft tracking the vessel from above.

The boat, valued at more than EUR 1 million (GBP 854,000), had been taken from the harbour at Soller, on Mallorca.

The alert reached the Guardia Civil through the 112 emergency line, and the firm that charters the vessel helped officers pin down its position.

A man of 52 was at the wheel, with a woman also on board, and he repeatedly ignored instructions to stop.

He allegedly tried to ram the patrol boats during the chase, which ran for around half an hour before he was caught.

Officers detained him near the small island of Tagomago, off the eastern coast of Ibiza and a considerable distance from where the yacht was taken.

Tagomago is a privately owned islet best known as an exclusive holiday rental for visitors to the island.

The man reportedly faces a charge of attempted robbery along with resisting and disobeying authority.

He said: "They are not going to carry excessively heavy sentences, but enough for them to have a bit of a problem."

Soller sits on the north-western coast of Mallorca and its harbour is a popular mooring for pleasure craft through the summer season.
