This is the shocking moment a car ploughs into two women walking home from mass and sends them flying through the air.
CCTV footage shows the incident in the town of Paulo Jacinto, in the Brazilian state of Alagoas on 19th July.
Closed circuit television captures the pair strolling along the road as the vehicle appears behind them and closes in without slowing.
One of the women is thrown up onto the bonnet by the force of the impact, while the second is flung sideways towards the pavement.
A separate account of the crash suggests the second woman ended up underneath a parked car at the roadside.
Witnesses said the two were making their way back from a church service when the vehicle struck them.
The man behind the wheel showed signs of intoxication and had reportedly come from festivities being held in the town shortly beforehand.
He is reportedly a serving local councillor who is well known in the community, and lost control of the car before the collision.
Officers detained him at the scene, but he was freed the same day after completing the necessary formalities and putting up bail money, according to reports.
No official update on the condition of the injured pair has been released, although those who saw the aftermath said one of them was left with a fractured leg.
The area, known as the Zona da Mata, lies in the eastern part of the state.
Investigators are now working to establish what caused the driver to veer off course, with the circumstances of the crash due to be examined by the responsible authorities.
